Hi, I am a solar panel & battery installer in Perth & Peel area in western australia approved by CEC, NETCC, NECA.
A few practical things I tell customers around Perth:
Match the system size to how you actually burn power. Look back over a full year of bills and read the daily kWh figure rather than the total dollars, then add battery capacity only if your evening use is heavy.
Shift the dishwasher, laundry and pool pump into the middle of the day so the array feeds them directly instead of exporting cheap and buying the same unit back dear at night.
Watch shading across the seasons. A gum or a fence that only clips one corner of the array in autumn can still cost a surprising amount of output over a year.
Rinse the glass with a garden hose on a cool morning every few months. Coastal salt and dust build up fast, and you should never blast panels with a pressure washer or harsh chemicals.
Log your inverter readings monthly. A steady slide usually points to dirt or new shade, while a sudden step change suggests a tripped isolator or a panel fault worth catching early.
Check the paperwork before you sign. Tier-one modules, a solid inverter brand and an installer who will still answer the phone in ten years matter more than the cheapest quote on the day.
A battery earns its keep when you export plenty by day and draw plenty after sunset, so run the numbers against current WA feed-in rates and any state rebate before committing.
Book a proper health check every few years so roof fixings, cabling and isolators all get inspected while problems are still small.
